General Counsel – E-Commerce Start-Up – London or New York

Our client is a Series D funded specialist e-commerce platform with offices in London and New York, which is a global leader in providing authentic goods to its loyal customers. This business has grown exponentially with a footprint in more than 60 major cities across the UK, EMEA, US, Australiasia, and APAC. The business now needs to hire its first General Counsel to report to the CFO and build a legal team to focus on the growth of this unique and highly admired business.The RoleYou will create a legal function and report to the CFO with a direct line to the CEO and board of management where you’re required to provide excellent legal commercial judgment and the ability to identify possible legal risks which may impact the business. You will hire and create a legal team to operate in multi jurisdictions and you will establish a legal panel to assist the business with its next stage of development.The CandidateThe ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10yrs PQE with training from a reputable international law firm or in-house with a leading Tech Business. Candidates with additional legal skills in Finance, Corporate Law, and non-legal expertise in business operations in a multi-jurisdictional environment would be of huge benefit. A world-leading eCommerce platform is seeking an experienced Privacy Counsel where you’ll have ownership for German Privacy matters whilst working closely with EU Privacy Team. This opportunity is purely consumer-focused allowing you to quickly develop a real commercial sense of awareness where your judgment is required on data protection and legal advice relating to products and key business services.The RoleYou will advise the Commercial and Operations Teams on regular Data Protection and Privacy matters where specific teams will require your knowledge and input in exciting business innovation and ground-breaking projects. Although this role has a primary focus on Privacy you will regularly collaborate with the commercial IT legal team when advising and guiding business leaders. You will be part of the German legal team and work very closely with the EU Privacy team where you’ll advise on a broad range of privacy programs to safeguard from risk & compliance issues with German and EU Data Protection guidelines.The Candidate The ideal candidate will be German Qualified with a minimum of 4yrs legal experience where two years of which is gained from a leading Privacy Team of an international law firm. Candidates must have an excellent command of verbal and written English with the ability to negotiate in German and English. For this role, candidates should be capable to manage a significant number of projects autonomously in a timely manner. You will report to the General Counsel in London along with an existing team of 5 lawyers and can work full-time remotely or from their offices located in Dublin or London.You will work as part of an excellent team of commercially-minded lawyers who have all gained extensive fintech experience where you'll be the primary lead for drafting, reviewing, and negotiating on a range of commercial and technology contracts including SAAS contracts, software development and licencing agreements, supplier and partnership agreements, data processing agreements, NDAs and consultancy agreements.
